Bathroom Etiquette
Bathroom etiquette (also known as toilet etiquette), refers to the social norms and practices that guide behavior in shared restroom spaces; whether it’s in the public, office, or even your own bathroom. It is the proper and considerate behaviors one should follow while using public or shared restroom facilities. And practicing good toilet etiquette is essential for maintaining proper hygiene, respecting others, and creating a clean, comfortable environment for everyone.
With that in mind, let’s see what are some key principles that we should all practice when it comes to bathroom etiquette.
KEEP THE TOILET AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE
First and foremost, everyone has the responsibility to ensure the cleanliness of the bathroom space. Dirty bathrooms are extremely disgusting and unhygienic, which is why proper hygiene and sanitization should always be one’s top priority. It requires effort to keep toilets clean and doing so is everyone’s job. So do your part and clean up after yourself once you’re done using the toilet or bathroom as a courtesy to your family members, workmates, and everyone else.
DON’T FORGET TO FLUSH
One, if not the worst thing you can do after using the bathroom is forgetting to flush the toilet. Leaving waste in the bowl without flushing is not only ridiculously unsanitary but utterly rude as well, regardless of the waste. How would you feel knowing that the person before you did not flush the toilet and left their business unattended? Sickening, right? So be sure to keep the bowl clean and free of any traces of dirt and bacteria. And try to make it a habit to always check if you’ve flushed before leaving the bathroom.
ALWAYS REMEMBER TO WASH YOUR HANDS
Washing hands is basic hygiene and one of the most common practice in the bathroom space, something people shouldn’t need to be reminded to do. However, there are certain minorities who ignore this practice, making it that much easier for germs and bacteria to spread around others. Even improper washing is just as bad. So, be sure to always wash your hands thoroughly after doing your business and dry them off afterwards.
Regardless of what it entails, bathroom etiquette isn’t just about being proper — it also involves good hygiene. Though many may find it to be an uncomfortable topic, it’s something all of us should be aware of.
